It has been proven more than once that a simple ballpoint pen in the hands of a talented artist works wonders. Juan Francisco Casas draws portraits that are indistinguishable from photographs with ballpoint pen, Elena James creates ornamental designs reminiscent of embroidery, and Anna Emilia Laitinen - heavenly smoky landscapes. Canadian illustrator Shawn Kuruneru uses a black ballpoint pen to paint pictures with a luminous effect.
Sean Kuruneru was born in Toronto and now lives and works in Montreal. His work is a combination of drawing and collage. Large-format canvases depicting black silhouettes of people and animals are created from intricate, elaborate lines drawn with a ballpoint pen. Thousands of strokes form a complete picture that evokes associations with nature, pop culture and life experiences.
The images used by the artist come from everywhere: from the pictures the author sees in a passing picture, they are borrowed from comics, music album covers, photographs in newspapers and magazines. He sorts, groups, connects, combines, adds different elements and interprets everything in his own creative language, impregnating with his own style.
Sean Kuruneru's illustrations have an element of surprise and a luminous beauty that comes from a million repetitive movements.
