Many photographers are engaged in macro photography of nature, including the creation of pictures of bright butterflies. But only the Norwegian Kjell Sandved saw the letters of the Latin alphabet on their wings and decided to collect them all! It took the photographer 24 years to do this.
The idea to create such an unusual alphabet came to Kjell more than 25 years ago. “I noticed a butterfly inside an old cigar box. It had a perfect “F” on its wing. A light flashed in my head: if one letter arose in nature, then it is likely that others exist! And I decided to be the first to find them."
Kjell took his pictures early in the morning or in the evening, when the butterflies are relatively inactive. “I never wanted to bother or harm them. So I learned to quietly sneak up on them, and sometimes I was able to take pictures from very close distances,”says the photographer.
Over the years, the photographer has found not only the letters of the alphabet and numbers from 1 to 9, but also found striking patterns in the form of faces, eyes, animals and human figures on the wings of butterflies and moths.
