Dutch artist Anne ten Donkelaar could have become a modern doctor Aibolit, if not for the fact that her patients do not survive and turn into installation elements Broken butterflies … The point is that the artist heals the damaged butterflies by giving them new wings made from a variety of materials, including gold, antique cards, fishing line, thread and embroidery. It's not hard to guess where the artist gets her inspiration from. It was presented to her by nature itself, as well as those found objects with the help of which "Aibolit" from art creates its unusual works. No, Anna ten Donkelaer does not run through forests and meadows, armed with a butterfly net. Often she finds the wounded bodies of these gentle and graceful creatures on the windowsill of her house - gullible insects naively fly into the light, but stumble upon a barrier in the form of glass …
It is certainly sad to see how these stunningly beautiful insects die. But if there is no way to keep them alive, you can at least save their bodies by doing it in the name of art. Of course, this will be a new, completely different life with new interesting wings instead of damaged ones. They cannot be waved, not circled over a fragrant flower, but turning into works of art, wounded butterflies themselves become a kind of "flowers", especially if this association is caused by designer wings developed by Anna ten Donkelaer. More unusual works of art from the Broken Butterflies series can be seen at Anne ten Donkelaar website.
