German baker and photographer Karin Pfeif-Boschek has taken baking to a whole new level. Her pies are more like patterned panels than food, however, they look not only beautiful, but also appetizing. Therefore, people who are on a diet should not look at these products. Or watch, but think that this is not a cake at all, but a beautiful painted dish. Jokes aside, but Karin can really be called an artist.
The baker expertly carves the dough and arranges the pieces and fruits to create delightful artistic designs. Vibrant botanical and geometric designs lined with delicious pies make them too pretty to eat. During the pandemic, many people around the world began experimenting in the kitchen, preferring their own dishes, no longer actively ordering food from restaurants, so Karin's experience may have come in handy.
Karin's husband, an American by birth, learned how to make pies from his mother, an honored baker and a very good cook. Tasting them, the woman understood that her husband's pies tasted delicious, but she always wondered: shouldn't she decorate them in the same way as, for example, pastry chefs turn cakes into works of art?
At this time, Karin just opened an Instagram account. She began to experiment and decided to post her attempts to decorate the cake on the Internet.
“To my surprise and delight, the comments were positive, which led to a rapid increase in the number of subscribers to my account,” says the baker-artist, who, by the way, has already accumulated under 100 thousand subscribers on Instagram.
By the way, Pfeiff-Boschek recently released a book in which she shared 25 of her best recipes, as well as different types of techniques that she recommends to use for "pie artists". She tells you step by step how to make the same masterpieces, the book contains all the information you need - from the best tools for making dough to baking. However, it is worth warning that, in addition to knowledge, talent is also needed in this matter. Therefore, a baker with golden hands is not afraid of competition.
- My ideas for new projects are inexhaustible - I have much more than free time to bring my plans to life, - says Karin, - Inspiration comes from nature, from inanimate objects and from traditional graphic and geometric drawings.
According to the craftswoman, it takes from two to six hours to artistically decorate the cake. She usually starts by making a pie shell, filling it, and then either lays down a flat top crust as a base for further decorating, or adds decorations to the fruit filling.
- As an alternative for decoration, I can simply use colorful fruits. And if I want to color the dough, I only use natural colors - such as freeze-dried berry powders, turmeric, red beets or spinach powder - shares Karin's secret.
In addition, for decoration, the baker often uses different cookie cutters or cuts the dough using a very thin knife blade such as a scalpel or paper cutter. She often combines several cutting techniques to create unique designs. And, as the craftswoman says, she really doesn't need any special tools to work.
- I have two firm principles when it comes to decorative pies. First, they must be delicious. Second, they need to look good ready-made, not just before baking, says Karin.
Typically, a woman bakes one to three pies (more precisely, works of art) a week. They usually eat them with loved ones themselves or give them to friends or neighbors.
- Now, during the COVID-19 epidemic, I bake a little less. I spend a lot of time training our 14 month old German Shepherd, Halgrim, as well as working in our large park-like garden. We bought a 20th century abbey, which we completely rebuilt ourselves,”says Karin.
But even though Karin bakes less now, her stunningly designed mural pies remain social media hits.
