Almost every corner of the earth, be it a city, village or just a locality, is sung in the works of the masters living there. Their creations give the first impression of their native land. That is not to count all that is dedicated to Moscow, the city that has nurtured a galaxy of the best artists of the brush. The Moscow theme is widespread in their work, and today we will walk along the picturesque streets of Alexei Shalaev's old Moscow.
A little about the artist
Many people think that all the great masters of painting are far in the past, but this is a deep delusion. Contemporary artists who have found their niche in the visual arts also deserve recognition.
Alexey Shalaev, a native Muscovite, was born in 1966. It so happened that in his youth he graduated from the Aviation Institute, and instead of painting, he studied electronics of aircraft automation systems and much more, which was very far from art. However, the talent of Alexei waited in the wings and splashed out on paintings, when in the early 90s fate gave him a meeting with the teacher of the Stroganov School A. Skvortsov. And since 1992, Alexey has been participating in prestigious exhibitions in Paris, Prague, and a little later in Moscow.
The artist presents his work in various genres, but the most striking theme of his creations is the city landscape.
Moscow in the painting of Alexei Shalaev
Creating on his canvases the image of old Moscow avenues, streets, squares and lanes, Alexey draws plots from the sources of the history and architecture of the city. It makes no sense to describe the works of the painter in words, since it is pointless to try to convey in words the aching feeling of nostalgia for the era in which many of us were born, grew up, got a start in life. They need to be contemplated … mentally wander through them, indulging in nostalgic feelings …
Especially for those who love the cultural capital of Russia, "Venice of the North" through the eyes of contemporary artists: A journey across the picturesque bridges of St. Petersburg.

We bring to your attention an excellent selection of paintings dedicated to Moscow and Muscovites of the 70-80s
Why did they take bears through the streets in Russia, and why the emperor forbade this fun?
Today, a man with a dog on the street is not surprising. But if not a cute dog, but a shaggy bear, were walking on a leash, perhaps it would have caused panic. Unless it's shooting some kind of film or program about animals. But in old Russia, up to the 60s of the 19th century, in cities and villages, one could very often see a clubfoot, which was led along the road. Children and adults watched with delight as the bear performed various tricks. This fun was very common and popular. Where did it come from?
Noble old age: Russian old women-aristocrats in the paintings of the XIX century
People grew up and grew old at all times, and among the noblewomen of the Russian Empire were not only young conquerors of officers' hearts who shone at balls. From comfortable chairs, from offices, from quiet living rooms of noble houses, old women, or, rather, elderly ladies, watched the tumultuous life of children and grandchildren, from time to time plunging into memories that often turned out to be much more valuable to them than the vanity of the present. Did the noble grandmothers of former Russia differ so much from those of today?
Multiple exposure photographs: the streets of a city at night through the eyes of a Japanese taxi driver

The past is a suitcase with a handle. "Memory Suitcases" - a nostalgic series of paintings by Yuval Yairi
Remember the common idea that the past is akin to a suitcase without a handle: it's hard to carry, but it's a pity to throw it away. The creative project of the Israeli artist Yuval Yairi completely contradicts this statement. For him, the past is a suitcase. With a handle. "Memory Suitcases" - this is how the artist called a series of nostalgic paintings made on … suitcases
