Remember the common idea that the past is akin to a suitcase without a handle: it's hard to carry, but it's a pity to throw it away. Creative project of an Israeli artist Yuval Yairi completely contradicts this statement. For him, the past is a suitcase. With a handle. "Memory Suitcases" ("Suitcases of Memory") - this is how the artist called a series of nostalgic paintings made on … suitcases.
The attitude to suitcases - these seemingly ordinary things - has always been quivering in art. A suitcase is our faithful companion in any travel, regardless of whether we are going to soak up the sea in the summer heat or change our place of residence, emigrating to a foreign country. The contents of travel bags are always valuable and necessary that a person has. Returning home, as a rule, we take souvenirs - or, more simply - memories of the days lived. This is what Yuval Yairi's concept is based on.
The suitcase for Yuval Yairi is the host on which he places paintings shrouded in a haze of memories. As a rule, these are abandoned houses, landscapes seen once, or even a road - a symbol of the relentless movement of life. All paintings are made in sepia tone, imitating old photographs. Each object depicted on the suitcases has its own story, which the discerning viewer can try to guess.
Speaking about his work, Yuval Yairi emphasizes that his project "Memory Suitcases" is an attempt to recreate the natural process of memory. By the way, let us remind you that Swedish artist Bo Christian Larsson speaks about the homesickness embodied in a suitcase - a house with a handle.
