The well-known American writer George R. R. Martin, the author of the cycle of fantasy novels "A Song of Ice and Fire", based on which the popular HBO TV series "Game of Thrones" was created, told reporters how he so easily kills even the most important characters in his story. According to Martin, even if a writer works in the fantasy genre, he should tell his readers only the truth, including such a seemingly elementary truth as that man is mortal. This rule should not be especially neglected when the central event of history is war, as in Martin's work.

Martin lamented that today in literature, in particular in fantasy literature, the image of the hero, his girlfriend and the hero's best friend is popular, who together embark on an "amazing journey" in which they defeat all enemies and nothing bad happens to them. The writer noted that this is a lie and in life it never happens. Heroes fight and die, receive terrible injuries, lose their best friends and loved ones. Every writer, according to Martin, should understand this and tell his story honestly.

At the same time, George Martin explained that he loves all his characters, even the seemingly most disgusting from a moral point of view. He also noted that it is difficult for him to say goodbye to them, but he does not consider himself a "killer of characters", as other characters do it. The writer added that he was sorry to part with his own creations in history, but “unfortunately for himself,” he knows how the world actually works, albeit a fantasy one.
