"The black rose is the emblem of sadness, the red rose is the emblem of love." Familiar metaphors merge into one at the sight of those drawn on the asphalt “ red roses Sarajevo ”. These images symbolize the places where people died during the armed conflicts between Serbs and Muslims. From 1992 to 1996, the city of Sarajevo was bombed, making it the longest siege in the history of modern warfare.
"Roses" are real "scars" left by fragments of mortar shells on the streets of the city, later they were painted red in memory of the numerous victims among the civilian population. Although traditionally considered a symbol of love and beauty, the rose has become a sign of sorrow and a collective memory of the traces of the war in Sarajevo.
Gradually, the “roses of Sarajevo” are disappearing, since 16 years after the end of the armed conflict, the asphalt road begins to partially change. However, there are still many of these "echoes" of the war, which is not surprising, given how many shells fell on the city during the 1395 days of its siege. According to some estimates, on average, about 329 bombs were dropped on Sarajevo every day. "The Roses of Sarajevo" can be seen not only on the ground, but also on the walls of the church, on the bakery and on residential buildings, all of which are a reminder of the horrors of war that local residents had endure for almost four years.
Unfortunately, today these emblems, losing their historical significance, attract the attention of tourists, often perceived by visitors as a local attraction. Many victims of the Bosnian war advocate to "erase" the "roses", thereby preventing vulgarization and nullification of their tragic meaning. Few of the newcomers can understand the real value of these "flowers", the pain and fear that people had to endure, understand how many innocent lives are behind every shell dropped on this city. In addition, some Bosnians themselves want to quickly forget the horror of the war, but the streets of Sarajevo are still full of "roses". They, like a dull echo of tragedy, do not disappear from the streets of the city.
There are so many places in the world where the war has left its destructive mark that everything is countless. Humanity even began to turn entire cities into terrible monuments, such as, for example, Oradour-sur-Glane in France after the Second World War, but never learned to live with a peaceful sky overhead …
