The artist Isaac Cordal, unlike most successful street artists, practically does not deal with graffiti and wall paintings. He prefers small sculptural plastics and practically does not change his favorite form of self-expression - miniature cement men who, since the early 2000s, have appeared, in groups or singly, on the streets, squares and beaches of Barcelona, London, Berlin, Brussels, and other European cities.
Last year, a selection of Kordal's works received a design in the form of the book "Cement eclipses" after the title of a long-term project, which we have already told our readers about.
In addition to the recognizable technique of execution, Kordala's works are united by a passionate interest in social problems of our time and sharp criticism of globalization, consumerism and criminal negligence in the exploitation of ecological resources.
The artist's new project was no exception. It is a large-scale installation of 2,000 miniature figurines and buildings set against a background of rubble and cobblestones, painting an unsightly picture of the collapse of capitalism and the inevitable catastrophic consequences.
The installation, dubbed "Follow the Leaders", was allocated a vast space on the Place de la Bouffe in the French city of Nantes, which was filled with crushed stones.
On this barren island in the middle of a cozy European city, victims of the local apocalypse huddle - thousands of tiny figures in identical gray business suits. The faces of some of them are hidden under masks, others are fiercely trying to revive their useless mobile phones, someone simply surrendered to a panic attack and looks around with animal fear.
Kordal states that "Follow the Leaders" is "a critical look at the social inertia of the human masses that challenges the stereotype of an all-powerful businessman confidently ruling the global community."
Pathetic little people seeking shelter among the ruins and rickety concrete structures that are about to become part of the general devastation, and desperately trying to find a way out of a hopeless situation, this is a brutal criticism of the current state of the world economy, a satire aimed at people in whose hands the reins of government this unstable structure.
