For more than a decade, historians, archaeologists and "black" diggers have been looking for the library of Ivan the Terrible. According to contemporaries, it was thanks to her that the first Russian tsar amazed everyone with his erudition. It is believed that among the books of this library is the first medical encyclopedia in Russia, compiled by the doctor Nikolai Bulev. So what kind of person was this, and why did even the kings and bishops fearlessly entrust their life and health to the doctor-astrologer of German origin, and how did he manage to influence the formation of the personality of Ivan IV himself?

Nikolai Bulev was born in Germany, where he received an excellent medical education. And he began his career as a doctor. Then Bolev entered the service of Pope Julius II, where he lived on rent. But he did not refuse a proposal from Russia to compile new Easter tables. For which he was awarded 10 thousand thalers. Bulev began to help the archbishop in the fight against heresy. At the same time, he was serious about astrology.

Having perfectly mastered the Russian language, Nikolai could not only speak it, but also write complex medical texts. The fame of Bulev's medical successes reached the tsar, who offered him a place as a personal healer. So he entered the courtyard of Prince Vasily III, the father of Ivan the Terrible. The Grand Duke trusted Nicholas unconditionally, and consulted with him on any occasion.

Once Vasily III went on a falconry, where he fell from his horse due to carelessness. As a result of the fall, a tiny abscess appeared on the thigh. The prince did not attach any importance to this, continued to hunt, and then threw a huge feast. But suddenly he felt a sharp pain, could hardly stand on his feet, and could not straighten up. Local doctors began to apply baked onions and honey infusions to the abscess, but Vasily was getting worse.

Pus incessantly flowed from the wound, the temperature rose, and the prince, unconscious, began to demand Nicholas, who was in Moscow. Boolev left, but it was already too late. A purulent abscess began and the king died. Nicholas remained at the Vladyka's bedside until the last minute.

The authorship of the first medical encyclopedia in Russia belongs to Nikolai Bulev. In the near future, this book will take its rightful place in the library of the erudite and well-read Ivan the Terrible. At first, Nikolai simply translated the German encyclopedia into Russian, then he began to add his own notes, advice for maintaining health, reflections on strengthening the spirit and body, as well as useful recipes and formulas for medicinal drugs from herbs and roots.

The medical tome was named "Dobrohotny windstorm". Vetrograd is a fabulous garden with green meadows, herbs, trees, berries and bee-workers. Here it was possible to cure literally everything through the method of naturopathy. The ingredients in the medicinal recipes were the simplest herbs and foods that people used in everyday life.

So, for example, Bulev recommended eating ordinary parsley to cleanse the liver, stomach, and kidneys. And from crushed parsley - make face masks so that the skin is smooth and beautiful. Boolev called a mixture of chopped cabbage with egg white as an ideal remedy for burns; he advised mixing cabbage juice with wine as a diuretic.

Ginger was advised for relieving stomach pains, cardamom for heart attacks, nutmeg for memory loss. Nicholas believed that in the travel bag of travelers and warriors there must have been black pepper, which helps with fever, toothache and headache.

In recent years, Bolev wrote many political and theological treatises. The main idea that he nurtured was the unification of Orthodoxy and Catholicism. He was reprimanded for these appeals, but he was given the opportunity to speak. His main mistake was the public prediction of a catastrophic flood.

He was not destined to come true, the authority of Boolev as a doctor and as an astrologer in influential circles fell. The last years of his life, Bolev was in disgrace. After the death of Nicholas, his relatives did not receive anything, all the acquired fortune was given to the needs of the state, to the prince's treasury.

BONUS And at the end of the story about Nikolai Bulev, a few excerpts from his book. And although the language is somewhat outdated, this does not interfere with checking the relevance of the ancient advice.
