Have you ever asked yourself why all fairy tales always end with a happy ending and the wedding of a beautiful heroine and her handsome prince? And what comes next? Did they really live happily ever after? Canadian photographer Dina Goldstein, who most likely does not believe in fairy tales, presented a funny project Fallen Princesses, in which she fantasizes about what the fate of beautiful heroines could be if they lived real the life of the most ordinary woman.
The idea of the project to Dina Goldstein was suggested by three-year-old girls who are crazy about watching Disney cartoons. Little girls see princesses and beauties as their idols, they even want to dress like their fairy-tale heroines. In Disney versions, there is always a sad beginning, where the girl has to endure a lot of trials, but in the end, a very happy ending. A princess usually always finds herself in the arms of a handsome prince.
In the Fallen Princesses project, Vancouver-based photographer Dina Goldstein decided to place fairytale heroines in a “life” context with its problems, illnesses, addictions, and hardships that fall on everyone's fate. These works transfer Disney princesses to a modern setting and show that the script about a long and happy life that is offered to children usually does not work in life, or does not always work. Therefore, we see Snow White in the role of a mother of many children, mired in household chores, and Cinderella, drinking in a bar with unfamiliar men because of an unsuccessful happy marriage, a Beauty who cannot come to terms with the coming old age and continues to do plastic surgeries, Rapunzel on a course of chemotherapy, the poor prince, who had been waiting all his life for the awakening of his princess, who never woke up …
