In the cartoon "Up!" we have already seen a flying house that landed on top of a huge cliff in South America. Here comes the Korean artist Do Ho Suh lifted into the air and then lowered a small apartment building. But not in a picturesque area next to a waterfall, but on the roof of one of the buildings of the University of California in San Diego.
In the United States of America, it is not customary to live at home with your parents while attending university. Even if your university is located across the street from their habitat. A student is an independent person who must live separately. It doesn't matter whether in your own apartment or in a hostel.
This tradition is dedicated to a very extraordinary installation by Korean artist Do Ho Suh called Fallen Star, which he installed in San Diego on the roof of one of the buildings of the University of California.
This installation is a small private one-story house. This building was first assembled by Do Ho Suhom from wooden structures in the courtyard of the University of California campus, and then with the help of a huge crane it was lifted to the roof of the educational building.
Moreover, it stands there not horizontally, but at a slight angle (10 degrees) in relation to the surface of the roof and, accordingly, the ground.
Installation Fallen Star, according to Do Ho Suh, symbolizes students, cut off from their usual life, a little disoriented, just starting their independent life. And the University of California is exactly the place where they comprehend the wisdom of the adult world that is new to them.
Well, in addition to its symbolic, metaphorical meaning, the Fallen Star installation is also used as an observation deck offering excellent panoramic views of the University of California and the city of San Diego as a whole.
There is a suspicion that the Fallen Star rooftop in San Diego will become the same urban landmark as Your Rainbow Panorama from Olafur Eliasson in Danish Aarhus.
