“It's interesting to do something that has no reason” - these are the words of the Englishman Julian Wolkenstein, renowned advertising photographer. When he has free time, he tries to do something for himself for pleasure, that is, shoot what he likes, approaching the next project with creativity: he takes pictures of people who yawn, he puts them in cages, takes photos of his travels and even photographs horses, or rather, not the horses themselves, but their stylish hairstyles.
The idea of photographing horses came from the English photographer Julian Volkenstein in a conversation with a friend of his, the art director. Talking about horses, his friend said that it would be really funny and ridiculous to take pictures of horses with hairstyles, because they have such long manes and there is a lot to fantasize about. Julian liked the idea and started developing it. The 36-year-old photographer has worked with stylist and hairdresser Acacio da Silva on the project, transforming ordinary horses into supermodels of the equine world.
The shooting process required a lot of effort and endurance. Volkenstein had never worked with model horses before, and the first test was a complete disaster. It took about 5 hours to put each horse in order. The animals didn't like being treated like dolls. When they were in front of the camera, they shook their heads, flinched, whinnied, ruffled their hair, and again they had to start all over again, style and tweak. It was not just a project, it was a whole battle for one successful shot.
Photographer Julian Volkenstein argues that personal projects need to be implemented for fun, for your own pleasure, and not for money, so that when people look at the works created by the photographer, their spirits are lifted and they can smile.
