A fabulous landscape in real life can be seen in Senegal, 30 km from Dakar, where an amazing pink lakeknown as Lac Rose or Retba lake. No, this is not a photoshop or an optical illusion: the water here is really painted in a deep pink color, like strawberries with cream. True, you shouldn't try this "dessert" by the mouth: the water in Retba Lake is incredibly salty, its concentration is about 380 grams per liter, which is one and a half times higher than in the famous Dead Sea. Naturally, it is unrealistic for microorganisms to survive in such conditions, and the only inhabitants of the pink waters of Retba Lake are halophytic bacteria, which give the lake its characteristic strawberry color. There are no algae or fish in this lake, and boats that glide along the calm waters of the lake are carried from shore to shore by local residents, who are miners of salt, which covers the bottom of the lake in a thick layer. On the shore of the lake there is an entire village in which workers and traders live, representatives of the Wolof people, the largest ethnic group in Senegal.
Rubbing their bodies with a special oil that protects against the destructive effects of incredibly salty water that corrodes the skin, salt miners spend the whole day at the lake. They dive to the bottom, blindly fill the baskets with salt, then unload it into a boat and take it to the shore. There, the catch is dumped into heaps, allowing it to dry, then washed and sorted out, clearing it of silt and sand. Burning out in the sun, the salt from the Pink Lake becomes snow-white - this is what they bring for sale.
It is impossible to drown in Retba Lake: water saturated with salt keeps objects on the surface, preventing them from sinking. But few tourists who come to admire the amazing lake with "bloody" water decide to plunge into the colored depths of Lac Rose. They prefer to watch from the sidelines and take a lot of pictures.
