He is frightened by books in which there will never be room for illustrations. He insists that he is not an artist, but an illustrator. However, everyone who sees the work at least once Alexey Kurbatov, make sure otherwise: rich inner world his illustrations are in no way inferior to paintings. His creations are eye-catching and leave a deep imprint on the memory and heart. And not only because of their unique style, but also because they have a soul …
Alexey Kurbatov was born in 1985 in Central Asia. He was born left-handed, and thank God that he was not forced to “retrain” as a right-hander. Alexey did not graduate from universities, but immediately plunged headlong into an independent life. And to work - which is more important for him. First, a typography, then a branding agency, and finally - the realization that such an activity is not quite what he needs. Now Alexey Kurbatov lives in Moscow, works a lot, but independently chooses which project to deal with.
Illustrations by Alexei Kurbatov adorn the Snob magazine, the Lenta.ru website, books, posters. Also, the illustrator collaborates with Lebedev's studio, which resulted in the project "Portraits of remarkable people of the twentieth century." The choice of personalities is atypical: Joseph Brodsky, Marlene Dietrich, Mahatma Gandhi, Clint Eastwood, Frida Kahlo and Sergei Dovlatov. And the technique of execution is somewhat similar to the portraits of K. Petrov-Vodkin: only a person and a conventional background, while an accurate transfer of individuality.
Alexey Kurbatov calls his technique mixed. To create works, he doesn't have enough "dead" Photoshop - he uses ink, watercolor and pays great attention to drawing tools (pen, brush or thread). His work is extremely painstaking, so the result is striking in its complexity and integrity.
When you look at Kurbatov's graphics, it is impressive how the illustrator managed to convey a rich inner world with the help of such seemingly poor means of embodiment. His works, on the one hand, are elegant and akin to jewelry work, and on the other hand, each has its own special inner world with a variety of emotions and experiences. This is an expressive, fantastic, romantic world …
Aleksey Kurbatov is convinced that an illustration is worthless if you want to throw a book or magazine into the trash after reading it. "I," says Alexey, "I draw on purpose for a long time and carefully, so that it would be a pity to throw it out."
