Easter week continues, Christian peoples continue to remember and relive the last days of the earthly life of Jesus Christ. Many of them are even too passionate about the holiday - which is why such frightening or dangerous ones appear. Easter traditionslike the Dance of Death in Vergès or the Greek fire of Ruketopolemos in Chios. But today we will talk about a completely safe, fun tradition - pour water over Hungarian girls.
This tradition is called Húsvéti Locsolás, which, in fact, is translated as "Easter pouring". Not all residents of the Gothic country of Hungary adhere to it, but only those who still understand something about ancient rituals and dresses - and such people, unfortunately, are less and less. “What other outfits are needed to be doused with water ?!” - the reader might think. However, the "trick" Easter tradition Húsvéti Locsolás is that the girls must be fully dressed, and it is highly desirable that in the national Hungarian costume.
Like many other Easter traditions, Húsvéti Locsolás comes from pagan times, even from the second century AD. In those days, pouring buckets of water over girls was part of the ritual of abundance. Probably, then this dousing was thought of by people as an analogy of irrigating the earth - so that a girl, like the earth, would become a happy and large mother. Undoubtedly, the erotic implication of such an action - presumably, the most beautiful girls in the village are doused most often and willingly.
And if we digress from history and eroticism, then the true background of the tradition, probably, lies in the thought: "What could be more pleasant than pouring a good tub of water on a person ?!", understandable and close not only to Hungarians. Let us recall, for example, the Thai festival of Songkran, where purification with water takes on the scale of a nationwide game. By the way, there is a similar tradition in Ukraine, where on Monday guys pour water on girls, and on Tuesday they "take revenge" on them. In principle, dousing girls is more productive, especially when the volume and duration of the cheerful squeal are considered the yardstick.
So, on the second Easter day, modern Hungarians gladly gather to visit familiar young ladies, taking a bucket of water. And girls usually not only do not mind, but also reward their douchers with something: an Easter egg, candy, candy or homemade cakes - and if they are lucky, even a kiss! Here it is, the benefit of knowing national traditions.
