But, if you are not a surfer, you can hardly appreciate the chip of the third largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago: in winter, wonderful empty "tube" waves form here. That is why on the island of Oahu, every year, from 8 to 20 December, the final stage of the men's round of the World Surfing Championship is held. This is perhaps the most prestigious event in this extreme sport. Those who have not been to Oahu have never seen real surfing! Waves here are so high and dangerous that sometimes they claim human lives: since 2005, five have paid with their lives for playing with the elements.
And yet, good surfing worth the candle. The Oahu Championship is the largest and most attended in the world, and features some of the world's most skillful and desperate masters - apart from perhaps the sporting dogs from an animal surfing tournament in California.
