Tomer Hanuka, a young Israeli illustrator and cartoonist, has earned the reputation of a genius draftsman and a man whose work does not tolerate any framework. His works are sharp and merciless to the untrained viewer, and his style is inimitable.
At the age of twenty-two, after three compulsory years of service in the Israeli army, Hanukkah moved to New York. Shortly after graduating from the School of Visual Arts, Hanukkah became a regular contributor to many American magazines. So, among his clients were Time Magazine, The New Yorker, Spin, The New York Times, Rolling Stone and others. Tomer is the recipient of numerous medals from the Society of Illustrators and Designers.
Tomer's brother, Asaf Hanuka, by the will of fate, shared his passion - today both of them are in-demand and popular artists. True, Asaf works in his native Tel Aviv, where Tomer is now only from time to time. Together they created the Bipolar comic series published by the American Alternative comics. The series received high praise from critics and was nominated for several prestigious awards at once.
Tomer says that he and his brother developed a love for comics in childhood. For hours little Tomer and Asaf spent looking at funny pictures, and then they themselves tried to depict something similar. It is not surprising that with such a base, they decided on a joint project. “It’s interesting that working in tandem, in a sense, you“lose”yourself, and the final product is no longer completely yours. In the early stages, this can be a serious problem, although now, of course, I do not think so. Working together is liberating in its own way,”admits Tomer.
Despite the fact that recently the comic book industry has undergone certain changes, and is no longer so in demand in print, the illustrator does not consider this a problem. “There are tablets, telephones - comics“move”there without too much loss,” explains Tomer. Talking about high-budget films that are shot in incredible numbers these days based on popular comics, Tomer ironically remarks: “Now I'm not at the age to watch all this seriously, but otherwise, I'm sure such films would blow my mind every weekend.
Now Tomer is working in tandem with his brother again - the graphic novel “The Divine”, the animated TV show “Hard apple” and other interesting projects are on the way.
