The author of satirical drawings, talented artist John Holcroft needs no introduction. His topical and outwardly uncomplicated works appeal to the sophisticated viewer and many fans of clever illustration. A denouncer of vices and injustice, John Holcroft brings the rational, the good and the eternal to the world through his laconic and deep art.
After graduating from college and finding the profession of his dreams, the newly minted graphic designer Holcroft was faced with a complete lack of demand: the economy of his native England was in a deep recession, and the artist had to cope with odd jobs for several years until he finally found freelance for himself. It was then that John came in handy with his talent as a skilled draftsman - Holcroft plunged into illustration.
The illustrator says that the style of his work has changed many times: it was important to keep up with the trends of the constantly changing industry, in which, in his own words, “Today your creativity flies like hot cakes, and the next day nobody will remember you. Any artist, one way or another, must learn to meet the needs of the market. If we talk about the personalities that inspired Holcroft and, of course, influenced the formation of his style, it is impossible to ignore Ian Pollock, Edward Hopper and David Cutter.
Looking back at his work three years ago, the artist experiences contradictory feelings: according to his own assurances, sometimes he is inexpressibly ashamed of some drawings, and if there was an opportunity, he would gladly remake them; he likes others.
While Holcroft boasts clients such as the BBC, the Financial Times and The Guardian, the artist is not always fond of commissioned work. He still seeks to devote time to creativity, doing exactly what is pleasing to him. And he is glad of the freedom that the profession of an illustrator gives him.
