What happens when you combine the bold, dynamic, detailed design of a vintage poster for movies like Star Wars or The Evil Dead with modern graphics? The result will be Tom Whalen's “Strong stuff” collection of funny, charming, colorful posters of movie and comic book heroes that we all know and love (from Indiana Jones to Transformers).
Tom's illustrations are fan art of a man who is crazy about Marvel comics and good old (or not so good) movies. The word "fan" is used for a reason - Tom Whalen is a big fan of comics. As a child in Pennsylvania, he spent long hours in his grandmother's pastry shop, reading comics from cover to cover. In addition to reading comics, Tom drew superheroes from Marvel comics for no less long time and diligently at the desk given to him by his father. Inspired by the desire to draw any comic book character he could think of, Tom went to art school.
Tom loves vector graphics. According to him, in this kind of illustrations, the artist is given an amazing freedom of action during the creative process.
“I am constantly making small changes in composition and colors, and I think I would go crazy to hell if I worked with the usual means. I love that an illustrator today can make a sketch (especially if time is tight) and finish the rest on the computer,”says Tom Whalen about his work. By the way, Tom's typical clients are fans of comics and classic films like him.
Tom Valen has done an excellent job, breathing new life into movie and comic book characters, forgotten and not so much, but in the future he (in addition to doing what he loves - vector graphics) dreams of making his own comic book or an official poster for some film … Aspiring guys like Tom tend to have dreams come true.
