In the crowd of animal lovers who are touched by the sight of puppies, kittens and newborn chicks, there is hardly at least one who does not like pandas. These funny, soft and awkward black and white bears are not only one of the symbols of China. It is also an inspiration for many Chinese artists. Thus, one of the modern adherents of the national Chinese painting Guohua, the artist Luo Renlin, dedicated a huge layer of his work to the pandas.
The traditional style of Chinese painting guohua is interesting in itself. Following a special technique, artists paint with special water-based paints on silk and paper scrolls. Thanks to this combination of materials, paintings created in this way differ significantly from ordinary canvases created with watercolors, oils, gouache and acrylics.
The gohua style was popular back in the 19th century, for a long time it was undeservedly ignored, and only in the last few years this style has been experiencing a rebirth.
Guohua paintings sell very well at exhibitions and auctions, and artist Luo Renlin's pandas are so popular that orders for new works are scheduled for many months in advance.
