An American artist-restorer has restored the image of the painting by Leonardo da Vinci "Mona Lisa" in the form in which it could have existed in the 16th century. The artist's copy differs significantly from the existing original, mainly in its color palette. The reason for this is the age of the painting. Jennes Cortez worked on the copy. It should be added that the artist paints in the genre of classical realism.
During her work, Cortez relied on information about the painting from the Center for Museum Research and Restoration in France. In addition, a huge exploration work has been done. We analyzed numerous historical information about the original canvas, its copies, analyzed the surface of the painting and the coloring composition used to create the canvas.
Modern "La Gioconda" is quite different from the original created by Leonardo. Many areas of the copy are significantly lighter, while others, on the contrary, are darker. According to Cortez, the reason for the differences lies in the natural chemical processes that take place in the varnish. Humidity, excessive cleaning and other restoration work also affect the painting. As a result of all this, the least resistant varnish pigments begin to disappear from the canvas.
In addition to all this, Cortez completely restored some of the lost areas of the canvas, for example, the eyebrows. Many other small details have also been restored.
Jennes Cortez expressed the hope that her "La Gioconda" will be liked by everyone who sees her. The restorer added that she had put all her knowledge, strength and passion into the canvas-copy, and very much hopes that “the playful muse hovered above her, which was once above Leonardo”. With all this, the American noted that she did not in any way claim to compete with the great master.
