On March 28, 2013, Italian sculptor Aron Demetz opened an exhibition entitled The Tainted at Gazelli Art House in London. The author creates perfect life-size human figures from wood. The artist sets fire to finished sculptures, saws or "spoils" in other ways. In this way, Aron Demetz tries to emphasize the connection between nature, which acts as a woody material, and a person, whose perfect figure, under the influence of the outside, changes its essence.
With The Tainted exhibition, Aron Demetz expressed his admiration for the human body by creating sculptures in perfect proportions. The artist chooses wood as a material for his works in order to reflect the relationship between man and nature, their simultaneous harmony and conflict. These sculptures are not just a display of Demetz's emotions. The author tries to go back in time to the origins of human coexistence with nature.
The artist's works are entirely made of natural wood, whose properties Demetz tries to use to the maximum. It takes a lot of time to make each sculpture, which is not enough in this fast-paced digital age. Demethz says this antiquated approach to woodworking is part of The Tainted theme, which he says “shows that enlightenment is achieved by overcoming a long and arduous path of suppressing passions.” The sculptor believes that his works should encourage the viewer to reconsider their attitude towards self-improvement and the fleetingness of time.
Originally from Val Gardena in northern Italy, Demetz has completely revived the traditional woodcarving style that flourished in the city in the late seventeenth century. In his sculptures, the artist ignores the sentimental scenes typical of the works of the authors of those times. Instead, he tries to display the spiritual essence of a person in them. Thus, his works are on the verge of age-old traditions and modern aesthetic views.
By adding other materials to the made wooden sculpture, or by various surface treatments, Demets is trying to finally change the perception of the human figure in the audience. His mastery of woodcarving has been compared to that of contemporary artists such as Joseph Beuys, Richard Long and Giuseppe Penone, who also draw inspiration from nature.
