It is almost impossible to find any information about Gehard Demetz, except that he was born in 1972 in Italy, where he still lives. But the results of his work - sculptural images of children carved from wood - are available to everyone, and now they are in front of you.
Here's what the author has to say about his work. “These are children aged six to seven. Rudolf Steiner noted that up to this age, children can feel or hear in the unconscious the experience of their ancestors. I've always been interested in this kind of thing, especially in connection with thoughts of my own childhood. The children in my sculptures are aware of this gift of theirs, also realizing that when they grow up, they will lose the opportunity to contact the unconscious, but will benefit from the advantages of adulthood."
Among the sculptures of Gehard Demetz are not only abstract and collective images of children, but also images of famous historical figures in their childhood. So, in the collection of the author there are sculptures of Adolf Hitler and Mao Zedong. As Gehard explains, in his works, he tried to understand and show how children with fragile shoulders and weak legs could become great dictators, thinking that something was wrong in their birth and growing up.
Demetz's works were once said to be made not of wood, but of material to create a dream. And dreams are the perfect place for dark surrealism to emerge. What are these lonely children waiting for? What stories are they hiding? They look at you and seem to invite you to punish them. And you painfully begin to remember - why …
Sculptures by Jerhard Demetz express so much expression that it is hard to believe that they are made of wood. It seems as if purity and innocence once disappeared, and now it's time for justice. The missing wooden parts of the sculptures reveal a painful truth: sometimes life can seem quite happy, but no one can hide from the past, no one can escape from their own ghosts.
