A Dutch artist and sculptor came up with an original way to play with dolls in adulthood. Sabi van Hemert … From ceramics, pieces of leather and cloth, she creates unusual sculptures of small children in strange poses. Either gymnasts, or yogis, or just spoiled kids, these outlandish figures are the basis of a large-scale art project called Children project … Talking about this project, the artist says that she creates figures that at the same time resemble human cubs and four-legged babies, and thus evoke ambiguous associations. Two-legged and four-legged babies are very similar to each other, it is not for nothing that from time to time in the media there are sensational news about children who were raised by animals, like the fabulous Mowgli. Habits, postures during sleep and feeding, desires, fears, behavior in some situations - children are children, it does not matter if they are covered with hair, whether they have fangs and claws, or whether they have a tail.
These unusual sculptures can both inspire and disappoint the viewer. But they will certainly evoke very diverse emotions in him, they will be able to make a person balance between such opposites as pleasant and repulsive, happy and sad, beautiful and ugly, annoying and pacifying. Everyone will be able to choose for themselves the side that is closer to him, and on the basis of this build their attitude to the extraordinary creativity of Sabi van Hemert. Will the viewer like her Children Project? The artist cannot know this, but she is sure that no one will remain indifferent.
Sabi van Hemert lives and works in Rotterdam. Visitors to Rotterdam museums and art galleries are the first to see the artist's new projects. Or you can get acquainted with them on her website.
