Ontario-based designer Ryan McArthur has created a series of posters that he calls "illustrated quotes." Witty statements combined with laconic illustrations bring the light of knowledge and inspire heroic deeds.
Perhaps everyone, even the most energetic and purposeful person, sometimes experiences an urgent need for additional motivation. Unfortunately, no one has yet come up with a universal recipe for overcoming the creative crisis. Some people are helped by a surge of adrenaline and new vivid impressions. Others, on the contrary, need to take a break and ventilate their worn-out head.
Of course, a parachute jump or a month in a forest hut without a telephone, computer or TV are radical measures. For starters, you can try the less extreme (and much less costly) old-fashioned method of reading a good smart book. But even if the energy and time is sorely lacking for this, quotes and aphorisms, carefully selected by unknown heroes on the endless literary spaces of the worldwide network, rush to the rescue.
Canadian Ryan McArthur offers an even more efficient (and effective) way to draw on the wisdom of previous generations without interrupting the manufacturing process. The designer drew a series of posters with quotes from favorite writers and philosophers, each with a suitable illustration. Such a poster can be hung on the wall behind the monitor or above the desk and be inspired while you work.
“This series of illustrated quotes is based on the sayings of the greats of the past. I have always found solace in small witty aphorisms, because most of them refer to what unites us all - human nature. I really wanted to collect quotes and excerpts from my favorite books, which would not only provide material that can be advantageously beaten graphically, but would also say something important about life in general,”comments Ryan.
MacArthur's work justifies the name "illustrated aphorisms" not only in terms of plots, but also from a formal point of view. Clean, restrained in color graphics perfectly conveys two key qualities of a good aphorism: wit and conciseness. In addition, following the example of the great minds of the past, the designer writes and draws by hand - with a fountain pen and ink. Technological progress takes its toll only at the very last stage, when Ryan digitizes and slightly corrects the finished work.
Ideas, as usual, are in the air, and the concept of the series is pretty obvious. So it's no surprise that Ryan MacArthur's posters closely resemble illustrations by Evan Robertson. So that's great. There are never too many good aphorisms, like good illustrations.
