The asceticism of the Chinese is legendary, despite this project by photographer Huang Qingjun, which captures Chinese families against the background of their houses with all the small belongings, can hardly leave the audience indifferent. It took the artist almost ten years to collect a collection of photographs, most of them were taken in small villages, whose inhabitants were not touched by the process of modernization.
During his work on the project, Hong visited 14 of 33 Chinese provinces, and was able to see how different the lives of people in different parts of the country are. The talented photographer was pleased with the results of his work, because in most cases people were sympathetic to the request to take out all the household utensils in order to show it to the paparazzi.
The shooting turned out to be quite troublesome. Often, work with each family dragged on from several days to several months. Sometimes the reason for this was the housing issue: for example, Hong had to wait a couple of months while one of the Beijing families moved to a new house, since their apartment was subject to demolition. But taking pictures of Mongolian families turned out to be as easy as shelling pears, so preparation for filming took no more than two hours.
Hong Qingjun does not want to complete the photo project yet, he plans to celebrate the 10th anniversary by returning to the families in the photos and see what has changed over the years.
