Fire is one of the most famous and popular metaphors in world culture. This is precisely the fire and the work of the Dutch studio is dedicated Rietveld Landscape entitled "Firemen walk with us" … In this work, its creators made an empty building by Gustave Eiffel in Maastricht "burn".
Fire fascinates a person. Fire is one of the most beautiful sights on Earth. It’s not for nothing that the whole district rushes to the fires. Fires are also popular in culture, because using this metaphor, you can convey a huge number of meanings. Examples include The Burning House photography project, the Las Fallas fire and doll festival, and firefighting posters from Cape Town graphic artists.
So the studio Rietveld Landscape decided to use the fire theme in their work. The result was the work "Firemen walk with us", presented at the Venice Architecture Biennale.
As part of this work, the guys from Rietveld Landscape made one of the architectural masterpieces of the Dutch city of Maastricht "burn" - a building designed by the famous engineer Gustave Eiffel.
Of course, this building did not have to be burned for this at all. Employees of the Rietveld Landscape studio simply lit several dozen small fires in the corridors and rooms of this empty building. This was enough to make it seem as if the building was on fire in the dark. Of course, the Maastricht fire department was warned of this creative act in advance, so that its representatives were on duty in the building on a permanent basis. You never know what an unforeseen event will happen.
The main idea that the participants of the Rietveld Landscape studio wanted to illustrate in the work "Firemen walk with us" is that modern society is constantly at risk of big trouble, that any spark could ignite a fire. Fire both in the literal sense of the word and in the figurative, metaphorical.
