The world is a fragile structure that is not as big and reliable as it seems. This is what the American artist from South Africa Lisa Swerling is trying to tell us about in a series of her installations titled "Glass Cathedrals".
This series of mini-installations got its name "Glass Cathedrals" thanks to the plot of the film "Oscar and Lucinda", in which the protagonist argued that he could bring to Australia a glass copy of the cathedral, created at the factory of the protagonist.
This idea seemed to Lisa Sverling very unusual and promising. So she created several miniature installations, representing … no, not cathedrals, but scenes from everyday life.
On one of Lisa Sverling's works from the "Glass Cathedrals" series, you can see a young couple riding bicycles around the world, on the other - a couple of old people quietly sitting on a bench under a tree, on the third - a diver who found himself at the bottom of a reservoir, closed with a cork, like a bath, on the fourth - a painter, painting over the space around him with black paint.
And all this is inside small wooden boxes, one of the walls of which is missing, so that we can see these funny mini-installations by Lisa Swerling (remember the installation "The Space of Art" by Atelier 37.2, in which the audience could climb into wooden boxes themselves!)
The author of these works herself explains their meaning, their conceptual idea in the following way: “In the“Glass Cathedrals”I wanted to draw attention to the limited human perception, human understanding of the world around us by means of scale. And it is best to pay attention to this with the help of a universal experience for all: children, marriage, travel, relationships."
These mini-installations from the Glass Cathedrals series will be on display at Origin: The Contemporary Craft Fair in London this September.
