Video: With one stroke of the pen. Illustrations by Ty Wilson

African American artist Ty Wilson from Maryland is called universal, as his work is ideal both as templates for painting on glass and as patterns for embroidery, not to mention the fact that as postcards, posters and prints, his work would also look amazing. No joke, the author can draw with just one stroke of the pen what for which others require much more strokes, lines and colors. It's hard to imagine that Wilson's crazy career began with … cheating in kindergarten. So, the boy brought to the class a drawing of a bluebird, drawn by his brother, and passed it off as his work. Then the teacher asked Ty to draw a bird right in the classroom so that other children could see how he did it and also learned how. And standing in front of an untouched sheet of white paper, pencil in hand, Ty Wilson vowed to himself never to lie again and would certainly learn to draw. No sooner said than done.
Ty Wilson's laconic and talented work made the former liar one of the best-selling artists in America, his paintings were snapped up on the fly like hot cakes, and by the mid-90s he became the most popular poster artist among African American authors. Wilson's paintings have featured in famous films and TV shows such as Las Vegas, Friends, Melrose Place, Let's Dance, and Dawson's Creek.
Ty Wilson graduated from the Maryland College of Art and Design, where he later lectured on "Art and Business in Art", and later joined the college's board of trustees. The Ty Wilson Fellowship is awarded annually to the freshman arts elective.
