Can smilies fully replace emotions during correspondence? It all depends on your facial expressions and the imagination of the interlocutor. Caldwell Tanner presented a funny interpretation of the "joy badges" in the "What You Text vs What I See" series of cartoons.
:) It's just a smiley. But if you use your imagination, you can imagine my smiling face. And what about the picky emoticons? This is where the rich imagination of a person reading a smile from brackets and dots comes to the rescue. If you take everything literally (more precisely, "symbolic"), you can imagine the grimaces of a virtual interlocutor. A visual aid for deciphering the meaning of emoticons - caricatures by Caldwell Tanner.
With the help of punctuation marks and symbols, we try to compensate for facial expressions and emotions, to make the correspondence more intense and lively. There are those who are for emoticons, there are ardent opponents. Everyone chooses their own. And not everyone will understand the "hieroglyphs": it is much easier to skip. Or see it in your own way, literally, which is what Tanner's cartoons show.
Catwoman with huge eyelashes, an X-shaped crack instead of eyes and a sideways mouth is such a collective image. Tanner came up with not only images for each graphic, but also funny names for them. For example, this face: 3 is called “Cool. You are a cat, I suppose."
Four mouths … Terrifying caricature. Those who like to write three lines of parentheses definitely have something to think about: what if your interlocutor has a richer imagination than Tanner's?
You can defend emoticons, praise them, and at the same time shame those who do not know all the intricacies of “emoticons”, call them “backward” and offer to find a list of “joy icons” on Wikipedia … The question arises: are we not returning to the origins? After all, our distant ancestors used such symbols for communication, but they did not have such a "great and mighty", and indeed, any other language. Or maybe, with such a frantic pace of life, we have no time to fully express our emotions?
P. S.: Whatever one may say, but for me all the same O:-) will remain “a man with a bowl over his head” …
