The items Valeria Nascimento creates resemble anything - cream cakes, spring flowers, silk ribbon bows - but not what they really are. After all, all the works of the author are made exclusively of ceramics. Have you ever thought that something so airy and delicate can be created from this material?
The author says that she draws inspiration mainly from the natural world, and ceramics is the best suited for translating her ideas into reality. “Porcelain has the smoothness and flexibility necessary to create new shapes that seem defiantly light and weightless,” Valeria Nascimento assures us. The author says that her work demonstrates the repetition and ordering of individual elements that form coherent sculptural groups. At the same time, Valeria emphasizes her special interest in large-scale wall installations.
Born in Brazil in 1962, Valeria Nascimento has been influenced by the shapes, colors and patterns of Brazilian landscapes throughout her artistic career. The author has always loved sharpened lines and simple forms, so she decided to study as an architect in Rio de Janeiro. This profession, according to the author, helps her combine urban landscapes and natural forms in her works. The sculptor became acquainted with clay in 1986, and since 1990 she completely abandoned her studies in architecture for the sake of art.
The sculptor began showing her works from her native Brazil, but to date, more than 40 exhibitions of her ceramics have taken place around the world. In 1999, Valeria Nascimento moved to the UK, where she opened her own studio.
