Video: When comics explode. Art by Stephen Tompkins

"I like to imagine what cartoons and comics would look like if you shake and mix them well. Artistic mess is always interesting, beautiful and original, so why not create it yourself," says Stephen Tompkins, American experimental artist. He experiments with the images, colors and shapes of his works, which is why they are so different - and so incomprehensible. Stephen Tompkins' paintings can resemble children's scribbles that appear in sketchbooks if the child is given colored pens or pencils and left alone for half an hour. However, children's drawings cannot be called masterpieces, with rare exceptions, since all these lines and squiggles appear on paper unconsciously. The American artist, on the other hand, carefully thinks out how and where to arrange the next squiggle. And if you look at them just as carefully, you can see familiar cartoon characters.
So it turns out that at first glance, all the paintings painted by Stephen Tompkins in acrylic on canvas, only at first glance resemble a set of multi-colored doodles. If you want to, if you look at the canvas, you can easily understand which cartoon or comic was "thoroughly shaken and mixed." Perhaps that is why there are so many visitors with children at the exhibitions of the works of this author. After all, all these pictures are a kind of riddles, rebuses. And this is always interesting.
Coma of unusual paintings, the artist is engaged in writing music, creating animation videos, as well as architecture. These and other works by Stephen Tompkins can be seen on his website.
