A balloon parade took place in Brussels last Sunday. Huge balls, made in the form of heroes of famous comics and cartoons, “strolled” through the streets of the Belgian capital, filling it with an atmosphere of celebration and fun.
In Belgium, comics are considered part of the national culture, and various events are dedicated to them. Drawn stories are respectfully referred to here as "the ninth art form" after poetry, film, television, and other genres. And this is no coincidence: after all, it was the Belgian authors who gave the world of comics such heroes as the Smurfs, Tintin, Spiro, Gaston and many others.
Of course, the parade was not limited to purely Belgian characters: the audience could see the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, SpongeBob, and Betty Boop … In addition, some balls were made in the form of Belgian landmarks. Unsurprisingly, the greatest delight of the crowd was caused by the famous Manneken Pis.
The balloon parade was held in a city with a long history only for the second time, but it has already managed to fall in love with both children and adults. The procession, which lasted more than three hours in total and was accompanied by performances by musical groups, began at the Place des Palais and ended at the Place de Brouckère. It is also worth noting that the festival was modeled on the New York Balloon Parade traditionally held on Thanksgiving Day.
