Video: Solar Equation - Night Sun over Melbourne

Mexican Rafael Lozano-Hemmer can be proud of himself: why, he gave the people of Melbourne … the sun! The model of the celestial body called "Solar Equation" appeared in the Australian city as part of the "Light in Winter" festival and is one of the author's most ambitious projects.
Solar Equation is a giant helium-filled balloon tethered to Federation Square. The diameter of the ball is about 14 meters, which, according to the author, is one hundred million times smaller than the diameter of the real Sun. Using images from NASA, Raphael managed to achieve the maximum similarity of his work with a distant star: with the help of five projectors, the author reproduced storms, flares and spots on the surface of the ball. Lozano-Hemmer did not forget about the audio accompaniment: all manifestations of solar activity are accompanied by the corresponding sounds.
Apparently, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer believes that just looking at the second Sun will not be very interesting for the audience, so he invites everyone to interact. All residents of Melbourne who have an iPhone, iPod or iPad can download the appropriate application that allows you to "manage" the processes taking place on the ball. In short, having such a device in your hands, you can influence the nature of storms and flares transmitted to the surface of the artificial sun.
The work, which can only be admired at nightfall, does not carry any specific message or meaning. According to the author, "while the Sun is spoken of as the source of global warming, drought, ultraviolet radiation, Solar Equation intends to evoke a romantic atmosphere of ephemerality, mystery and paradox."
Raphael Lozano-Hemmer was born in Mexico City in 1967. After graduating from Concordia University in Montreal (Canada), the author became a certified chemist. In his work, Rafael loves to work on interactive projects that involve the direct participation of the audience and the use of the latest technologies.
