Then they moved to Riga, where their mother worked as a cleaner and her daughter helped her. Of course, the girl dreamed of a different future. From her youth, she was fond of dancing and theater and dreamed of performing on stage. Despite the fact that her mother did not approve of her choice, she entered the drama studio at the theater and changed her name Alida to a more sonorous one - Viya.
After graduation, Viyu was accepted into the troupe of the Art Academic Theater, at the age of 27 she made her film debut. All-Union popularity was brought to her by the role in the film "Native Blood", where her partner on the set was actor Yevgeny Matveev. The film received several awards at international film festivals, according to the results of a poll by the magazine "Soviet Screen" Vija was recognized as the best actress of the year, in Latvia she became a real national pride, she was called "Mother Latvia". Evgeny Matveev and Viyu Artmane were considered one of the most beautiful couples in Soviet cinema. Only years later, she admitted that they were a couple not only on the screen.

After the law on restitution was passed, the authorities took away her apartment and handed over to the descendant of the former owner. The actress had to move to a dacha 40 km from Riga. The queen of Soviet cinema spent the last 10 years of her life in this small one-story wooden house.
In addition to the troubles in professional life, Viya Artmana also had to go through personal dramas. For 27 years she was the wife of the famous Latvian actor Artur Dimiters, but in this marriage she never felt happy. She confessed: "". Several times she thought about divorce, but decided to keep the family for the sake of two children. After the death of her husband in 1986, she was left alone. Only when her daughter was 30 years old, Vija Artmane revealed a secret that only she and her husband knew about: Christiana's real father is actor Yevgeny Matveyev, with whom she had an affair during the filming of the film "Native Blood".
Vija Artmane never complained about her fate and did not tell anyone that in the last years of her life she experienced great financial difficulties and was on the verge of poverty - the rent was twice her pension.
