Via Artmane was one of the most famous Soviet actresses from the Baltic states. The audience remembered her for her roles in the films "Theater", "Native Blood", "Andromeda Nebula" and "Arrows of Robin Hood". In the theater, she often got the role of queens, and this was understandable: the actress looked and behaved really regal. After the collapse of the USSR, she lost everything and spent the last years in complete oblivion and privation, and only before her death did the queen of Soviet cinema decide to reveal secrets about which she had been silent all her life …

None of the spectators had any idea that the regal Vija Artmane was not really blue-blooded, she was born into a peasant family in the village and was a shepherd boy as a child. She had to start working at the age of 10 to help her mother - the girl's father died 4 months before her birth as a result of an accident, her mother worked for wealthy peasants. Then they moved to Riga, where their mother worked as a cleaner and her daughter helped her. Of course, the girl dreamed of a different future. From her youth, she was fond of dancing and theater and dreamed of performing on stage. Despite the fact that her mother did not approve of her choice, she entered the drama studio at the theater and changed her name Alida to a more sonorous one - Viya.

In the early 1980s. the actress continued to actively act in films and perform on the stage. And in the early 1990s, with the collapse of the Soviet Union, a black streak began in her life. Vija Artmane was persecuted in her homeland due to the fact that she starred in a film based on Russian prose and at one time was a candidate for the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Latvia. In the theater, to which she devoted 50 years of her life, there were no more roles for her, and the actress moved to the Riga Youth Theater. New roles in the cinema were not offered. After the law on restitution was passed, the authorities took away her apartment and handed over to the descendant of the former owner. The actress had to move to a dacha 40 km from Riga. The queen of Soviet cinema spent the last 10 years of her life in this small one-story wooden house.
