The series "Rescuers Malibu" has become unique in its kind, if only because the number of its viewers exceeded a billion. The show is still popular now - when what is happening on the screen already seems naive, outdated, but cute action. This is not just a story about the work of Californian rescuers, this is a series about the nineties, about a beautiful life, about youth and, most importantly, about eternal summer.

In the Guinness Book of Records, Rescuers are listed as the most watched TV show, seen by 1.1 billion viewers. In just eleven seasons from 1989 to 2001, 245 episodes were released, and they were shown in 148 countries. Math, dizzying even for the American television industry - and the series risked ending as soon as it began. After the first season was filmed and shown, the producers decided to close the project: it occupied only the 73rd line of the seasonal rating, and the shooting of each episode poured into a lump sum. "Rescuers" seemed to be unprofitable business.

But the leading actor David Hasselhof saw serious potential in the series and, together with other producers - Michael Burke, Douglas Schwartz, Gregory Bonann - volunteered to finance and revive the project. So Rescuers returned to the screens, and Hasselhof became the new executive producer.

At first glance, the secret of the series boiled down only to a beautiful picture, which every viewer could admire for an hour: tanned and athletic men and women in beach shorts and swimsuits, perfectly swimming, strong and able to cope with both the sea element and a gang of intruders. All this is set against the backdrop of a truly paradise landscape: the ocean, the sun-drenched beach and cliffs, or in extreme cases, the streets of Los Angeles with their convertibles and palm trees along the roads. Both the music and the slow motion of lifeguards running along the beach, diving and sailing through the ocean waves became the "business card" of the series - it was really picturesque and inspiring.

It is not surprising that the heroes and heroines of the series have become permanent persons on the pages of glossy magazines, and the scandalous Playboy once devoted an entire issue to five actresses from The Rescuers. So what - it's all about the exploitation of images of sexy beauties and handsome men?

Why "Rescuers" are in no hurry to say goodbye to their viewer?

Each episode is one independent story, where the employees of the Malibu beach have to save drowning people, and not only drowning ones: among the misfortunes that awaited vacationers while the series was running, there were earthquakes, and shark attacks, and whole gangs of criminals - pirates, drug dealers and just bullies. In many situations, the series' rescuers seem to be substituting for the police - but restoring order and justice turns out to be much more spectacular than it could have, if everything went its own way.

And here, perhaps, the second secret of the Rescuers' success is concluded: these people in red beach uniforms are ready to selflessly serve the good. A naive and probably outdated approach to the idea of the series, but for some reason it worked then and remains attractive now. Mitch Buchanan and his team, despite the inevitable disagreements and disagreements, are noble people, and the fact that they look so amazing at the same time makes Rescuers something like a superhero series, or a beautiful fairy tale where good always triumphs over evil. Modern TV shows have gone from the romance of the nineties, the unconditional division into good and bad has become irrelevant, complex and multifaceted personalities are in fashion, but it must be admitted that what the "Rescuers Malibu" was famous for is sometimes very lacking.

Superheroes?

Therefore, you can return - at least mentally - there, to Los Angeles beaches, as they were seen a third of a century ago on the screen, to where superheroes are beautiful, strong and always win; where it is warm, sunny and completely different from the ordinary life of those on the other side of the screen. But, of course, it would be no less naive to deny that the performance and appearance of the actors from Rescuers had no effect on the ratings of the series. What's more, his popularity has actually been driven by a few top stars.

The main male role - the rescue officer Mitch Buchanan - is played by the same David Hasselhof, he also wrote several musical compositions for the series. Actually, the actor paid no less attention to music than to his filming activities. He recorded many singles and albums, which often became the leaders of the American charts.

Loud success, which was never surpassed later, awaited the performer of the role of CJ Parker Pamela Anderson. The actress has become a sex symbol of the nineties, despite the fact that her character in the series is played quite restrainedly, and Anderson's bright appearance is presented there not aggressively, but as a matter of course. As well as the images of other rescue girls - performed by Yasmine Blyth, Carmen Electra, Erica Eleniak, Gina Lee Nolin. Lieutenant Stephanie Holden played Alexandra Paul, whose twin sister became the first female firefighter in San Francisco's history.

According to statistics, the audience of the series was 65 percent women, and the reason is not only that "Rescuers" inspired the audience with images of strong and confident heroines. The male part of the cast was adorned, in addition to the main character, David Chervet, who played the role of Matt, Parker Stevenson, Jeremy Jackson, Jason Momoa - and a dozen more muscular tanned regulars of the beaches and their environs.

As part of the rescue team, a person for whom this occupation was a real job appeared on the screen - Michael Newman (Newmy), who was first invited as a consultant, and then got the role of one of the characters. He himself appeared more often than others in swimming scenes - in contrast to the rest of the actors, who were replaced by stunt doubles. Alas, the same Pamela Anderson did not know how to swim as fast and effectively as her heroine CJ.

Season after season, the team of those who are responsible for the safety of visitors to the beaches, and at the same time puts things in order in their relationships, pulled out drowning people from the depths, with the indispensable procedure of artificial respiration, pursued intruders on jet skis. After the release of the series on the screens, the number of those wishing to graduate from the rescue courses increased significantly - moreover, the "Rescuers" advertised the Californian beaches well.

In 2017, Rescuers Malibu was released, starring Priyanka Chopra, Alexandra Daddario, Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron. Hasselhof and Pamela Anderson also appeared on screen in cameo roles. But the title of "legendary" series from the nineties has not lost - and will not lose, apparently, as long as those who live in winter for six months and devilishly need the sun and the victory of beauty and goodness will need it.
