Lydia Fedoseeva-Shukshina and an outstanding writer, director, actor Vasily Shukshin … Maria managed to achieve success on television and in cinema and become an independent figure, nevertheless, questions about her famous father continue to be asked to her to this day. When Vasily Shukshin passed away, he was only 45, and his daughter Masha was 7 years old. To all the questions about her father, Maria answered approximately the same: “You know, I don't have so many memories of my father. To be precise, I have only five of them. And they are all quite heavy. And I don't want to talk about them."

But years later, when the actress herself was approaching the milestone that became fatal for her father - 45 years old, she decided to try to forget her childhood grievances and get to know her father again - rereading his books, watching films, communicating with his friends and acquaintances. In 2009, she admitted: “Over the past six months, I have re-read everything that dad wrote. I let through his thoughts about cinema, literature, life. And suddenly I felt that I was talking to him. Just like with my mother, who is my advisor, critic and censor all rolled into one. I admire my father's sense of humor, his wonderful irony. I was little when my dad died. It seems to me that I was really able to understand him only now."

The result of her new "acquaintance" with her father was the documentary "Tell me about my father" (2009), in which Maria tries to understand the difficult character of Vasily Shukshin with the help of her mother, as well as his classmates, friends, colleagues, among them A. Mitta, A. Konchalovsky, S. Nikonenko, E. Mironov and others. The actress says: “The project is very personal. I wanted to understand my father, to feel closer, to see what I have from him. I was looking for answers to many questions. What were my sister and I to my father? What place did the daughters take in the life of this writer, actor, director? I remember that they interfered with work. And how he loved us - I don't remember at all. Probably, because it was organic, normal, that's why I didn't remember. And so I want to learn from someone about how dad loved me and Olya, how he took in his arms, kissed, stroked on the head …”.

Thanks to this project, Vasily Shukshin becomes closer and more understandable not only to his family, but also to numerous fans of his work. Probably, no one better than his daughter will tell about the most difficult topics - about the fact that, due to the kind of activity, neither the mother nor the father had time for children, and how one day Shukshin forgot Masha in a stroller near a beer stall. The famous director and writer in the memoirs of his contemporaries appears alive and real: impulsive, honest, withdrawn, difficult to communicate, timid, shy, straightforward.

When asked why Maria did not dare to have a frank conversation about her father before, she replies: “Because this is a very big responsibility. I was only 7 years old when he passed away. If from the outside a person took and shot a film, this would be another material for him. But for me … It's very difficult."
