Video: No gloss: Informal photographs of the British royal family put up for auction
2024 Author: Richard Flannagan | [email protected]. Last modified: 2023-12-15 23:55
An interesting archive of photographs of the royal family is up for auction in the UK. It includes pictures that were taken over four decades - in the 1950s - 1980s. You can see a photo of 20-year-old bearded Prince Charles, who is strikingly similar to his son Harry today, unofficial photos of Princess Anne, Princess Margaret, Prince Philip and Elizabeth II herself.
All photographs were taken by John Scott, a photographer who has been given virtually unlimited access to the royal family for four decades. The fate of the photographer himself is also interesting. His real name is Vassa Voinovich. He is a Yugoslav aristocrat. In World War I, at the age of 17, he commanded a platoon. And during the Second World War, after the country was occupied by the Nazis, he left his native Serbia and ended up in England. His work with the royal family began with one photo - Queen Elizabeth II asked him to take a photo of her in military uniform at one of the ceremonies.
Colonel Vass Voinovich had a friend Sir "Jock" Colville, Elizabeth's personal secretary. It was thanks to him that the young princess Elizabeth saw photographs of a Serb. She asked to be photographed in uniform. The picture was so successful that it marked the beginning of Voinovich's photographic career, who at the same time changed his first and last name.

Prince Charles after the match
Prince Charles, like his father, played polo for a long time, calling this sport "my great extravagance." Only after 40 years, when he already had several serious fractures, he announced that he was leaving the sport.
Royal equanimity
This photo demonstrates how direct and unflappable the Queen can be. She watches the horse show closely, kneeling next to Lord Mountbatten (left) lying on the grass. And even the crowd of people behind her does not bother her.
Prince Charles with a beard
In this photo, Prince Charles is only 20 years old. He has a beard, and admittedly, it is not difficult to confuse him with his son Harry today.
Prince Philip is cooling off after the match
For many years, polo was a real passion of Prince Philip.

How do members of the British royal family live?
The British royal family does not possess real power in the country, does not pass laws or abolish them, but performs mainly ceremonial and social functions. But the fact that the Windsor dynasty is very rich is beyond doubt: precious jewelry, luxury cars, art collections, magnificent palaces, designer clothes, travel … All this costs money, and a lot. A logical question arises: if the monarchs do not rule the country and do not work anywhere, where do they get the finance from?
