Our body is only a physical shell, and everything that is most interesting and important that happens to a person is connected primarily with the soul and is hidden from prying eyes. American Christina Bothwell tries to look inside and reveal these secrets, embodying his ideas about life, death and metamorphosis in strange and mysterious sculptures.
Most of Christina's sculptures are made of glass and clay, although sometimes the author supplements his works with found materials, using them as certain parts of the body. The sources of such "auxiliary" elements are very different: these are old dolls, stuffed animals, and pieces of furniture. But still, Bothwell's favorite material is glass: "I can do with it the same as with other materials for sculpture, but in addition, glass allows light to pass through and makes it possible to see the space inside the object."
Basically, Christina Bothwell creates sculptures of babies, older children and animals, as they embody the essence of vulnerability - a theme that underlies all of the author's work. In his latest works, the sculptor also explores the theme of metamorphosis, therefore he combines several figures in one work, placing one in the middle of the other: for example, through the body of a glass fish, the outlines of a woman inside are visible.
“I think of my writing as souls filled with their own potential and giving life to new, improved versions of ourselves,” concludes Christina Bothwell.
Christina Bothwell received her art education at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, but her specialization was painting. The author studied the art of sculpture on her own, starting to work with clay in 1995, and with glass in 1999.
