Jennifer Anderson (Jennifer D. Anderson) finds unwanted reproductions of paintings and carves intricate lace, rose windows and repeating patterns in them. This not quite ordinary and, of course, beautiful work serves as an attempt by the author to understand the issues of vulnerability of human life, the constancy of memory and the transition from one state to another.
The original picture is destroyed, and a new image appears through the fragile remnants of paper and color. Rays of light pass through the many holes, and the shadows that appear on the wall as a result of this process become an integral part of the work. According to the author, the laborious process of cutting allows you to give the original work a new shape and fill it with a new meaning.
“In this work, there are tensions between meaning, materials and time,” explains Jennifer Anderson. - Unnecessary reincarnates. A new meaning and concept of beauty is added to it. " By the way, the author chose a rather original title for her series of works - "Engram". This word means structural and functional changes in the central nervous system when the body is exposed to various stimuli; in other words, the engram is the material basis of memory.
Jennifer Anderson received her BA from East Tennessee State University and her MA from The University of Georgia in 2001, specializing in graphics. Currently, the author, in addition to his creative activities, teaches graphics at Orange Coast College (Costa Mesa, California). Anderson's solo exhibitions are regularly held in various cities of the United States, and in 2009 the author's works could be seen in Russia - at the VI Novosibirsk Biennale of Graphics.
