Within the framework of the annual socio-cultural festival Lendwirbel, held in 2012 in Graz, Austria, renowned designer Markus Jeschaunig presented an unusual spatial composition Arc de Triomphe from the Waste of a Civilization. …
Arc de Triomphe is, in fact, a copy of the triumphal arches of antiquity, which were installed in cities in honor of winners or in memory of important events. It was not by chance that Yeshaunig decided to refer to the image of the majestic arch. The installation, consisting of metal rods and wooden substrates, claims to be one of the most impressive monuments of the era of consumption: the hollow space of the arch is filled to the top with stale baguettes and buns, which were collected for a month in bakeries, supermarkets and dumps in Graz. It was in this form that the designer decided to present his protest to excessive consumption and wastefulness. The two and a half tons of bread that Yeshaunig eventually managed to collect would be enough to feed many hungry people around the world.
Another impressive project on the same topic was presented by the photographer Gregg Segal. The main characters in the photo cycle "7 Days of Garbage" are ordinary Americans. The volunteers of the project had to collect household waste for a whole week, and then bring it with them to the shooting. The amount of waste generated by people in such a short time cannot leave indifferent even those who have little interest in environmental issues.
The installation about the culture of consumption was also presented in Shanghai by the Dutch tandem of designers from UNStudio. It was, however, about the culture of consumption of visual images.

How an artist hid the Reichstag and the Arc de Triomphe and what Hristo Yavashev put into his short-lived works

The person who conceived this - the artist Hristo Yavashev - is no longer alive, the work is destined to outlive the creator. Here, of course, there is a paradox - after all, the entire creative life of Yavashev and his partner and wife Jeanne-Claude was devoted to the illustration of the thesis about the fragility of art, the theme of its rapid and irrevocable reincarnation and further disappearance
