Just like a miracle tree grows at our gates … This is exactly what the residents of the city of San Mateo (California) might say if they were familiar with the work of Korney Chukovsky. And their tree is really unusual. And until recently, the blooming magnolia was no different from the rest, until the designer Jill et Lorna Watt decided to dress it up in knitted clothes. The result is a bright blue tree that catches the eye of passers-by.
The outfit imitates the image of an octopus. Magnolia branches play the role of tentacles, on the tree trunk there are funny knitted eyes, completing the resemblance. The aim of the project was to draw the attention of city residents to art issues. Jill et Lorna Watt admitted that she did not fully believe in the success of her mission. But as soon as the designer got down to work, dozens of passers-by began not only to stop nearby and ask about the purpose of her occupation, but also to help the girl as much as possible.
The very process of dressing the tree was long and difficult. At first, Jill et Lorna Watt spent a long time choosing a suitable tree in the park, then measured the branches in several places so that the future "sleeves" would tightly fit the trunk, then she created patterns for each branch separately and knitted an outfit according to the specified dimensions. After that, Jill et Lorna Watt sewed knitted blanks on the spot with knitted threads, creating a single image.
Residents of San Mateo were completely delighted with the cheerful blue octopus living in the park. Now they are asking to tie the designer of a bright crocodile like in San Mateo, which could not only be admired, but also used as a children's attraction.
