Last Saturday, May 28, a French team of 11 artists and 111 designers showed the world's longest comic strip. An art object 1 kilometer long could be seen on the Rhone embankment in Lyon (France). The protagonist of collective creativity is a primitive man who takes his first steps in the visual arts.
Work on the world's longest comic strip began the day before, on Friday night. Students of the Lyon school of Emile Kohl were tasked with drawing frames of the future comic strip on meter-long sheets of paper. The young artists were faced with the task of not going into details, but making sure that the sum of them turned out to be an interesting plot. Close-ups and a minimum of actors were welcomed. Viewers will watch the comic on the go, so clear lines and an uncomplicated plot are needed.
A group of students was supervised by teachers, helping when necessary. Another 50 students were in charge of the logistics of the project. The job had to be completed in 24 hours. A world record loomed ahead, so all those involved gave their best. The director of the annual Lyon Comics Festival (which will take place June 17-19 this year), Mathieu Diez, said that “initially the idea seemed a little strange to everyone,” but when and to whom did it get in the way?
A kilometer-long comic strip is an art story about a primitive man who is no longer just enough to exist in the world: to eat, sleep, hunt. He tries to capture this world - as best he can. How primitive man can draw, I think, there is no need to explain. So the neophyte artist will have a long creative evolution - a thousand drawings long.
Primitive man does not know how to speak, so black-and-white pictures do almost without "clouds" with text. But even without signatures everything is clear. Although the bird is a frequent "interlocutor" of the hero, it is a very enlightened creature: it "speaks" with notes. And the idea appears to the comic book character in the traditional form - in the form of a light bulb.
It took 800 kilograms of paper and 250 markers to create the world's longest comic strip. The public really liked the comic art on the Rhone embankment: walking, looking at humorous drawings, is much more interesting than just walking down the street. "So you can walk 10 kilometers!" - passers-by joked.
On Sunday evening, the longest comic strip in the world was removed from the fence, scanned and posted on the project's website. It should be published soon, approximately 100 pages.
