While photography is mostly portraits and landscapes, there are many qualities that differentiate talented photographers from each other within these areas. For the German Stephan Opitz, the quality is loneliness. And his works show the brightest and most beautiful side of this contradictory feeling.
Stefan's works are somewhat reminiscent of black-and-white photos of his compatriot Donata Wenders, only in her we see the soul of a person, and here - the emptiness and isolation of what surrounds him. A lonely figure (or a pair of figures) expands the theme of loneliness even further.
Stefan's photos are very intrusive, but they are less mesmerizing to me. Looking at them, you understand the depth and beauty of loneliness. The images used by the artist are completely different - from birds in the background of a tower to a deserted bay, from a lonely man in the subway to an abandoned room. Stephan Opitz seems to want to show us. That loneliness is everywhere, in everything that surrounds us.
“Taking photographs for me is like stopping my breathing. This is the heart, eyes and mind, brought together in one line, into one whole. Taking pictures is an opportunity to show your originality, to feel free. This is an art worth living for,”says Stefan. This is the paradox of his work: loneliness themefor which you want to live.
