The St. Petersburg theater community is looking forward to the arrival of the legendary American tenor Neil Shikoff in the Northern capital. At the end of April, the artist, who was nicknamed "Al Pacino from the Opera" for his dark charm and demonic appearance, will perform on the stage of the Mikhailovsky Theater. For viewers, this is the only chance to see the world celebrity in action. Director Arnaud Bernard brought the story of racial intolerance from the 15th century to Nazi Germany.

"Now art is nevertheless becoming closer to young people, there are many programs aimed at young active audiences, and they, of course, respond," says Russian actor Pyotr Fedorov.

The new director of the Mikhailovsky Theater, Vladimir Kekhman, set out to popularize opera and ballet two years ago. To begin with, he used his own funds to renovate the dilapidated interior of the building on Arts Square, investing $ 35 million in the reconstruction. Then he attracted Elena Obraztsova and Farukh Ruzimatov as consultants in the renovation of the troupe and the formation of the artistic strategy of the theater, which had not been sold out for thirty years. "I believe that the theater should definitely be both competitive and commercially in demand, although the state theater should also play a huge social role," Kekhman said earlier.

The previous management of Mikhailovsky, seven days a week, played old productions without rehearsals, just to report to the officials on the tickets sold. Kekhman came to the theater with the initial intention of investing in the future out of his own pocket, so he was not afraid to reduce the number of performances in favor of preparing fresh premieres. And although with him the occupancy rate of Mikhailovsky increased from 59% to 95%, some skeptics still do not believe that an expensive theater project will be able to become self-sufficient. “It is imperative to invest in culture, but you should not perceive it as a source of income. Investing in culture will bring benefits, but on a different level - after all, it is ultimately the spiritual health of the nation,” said businessman Arkady Novikov.
