The famous French writer Pierre Daninos once remarked: "A cynic is a person who says out loud what we think." Illustrator and designer Eduardo Salles recently introduced a series cynical illustrations (Cinismo Ilustrado), which became an attempt to comprehend the realities of modern life. The pictures show devices that have replaced simple pleasures, and people mired in virtual reality.
“Life is what happens to you while you look into your smartphone,” - this is the philosophy of the new time. The paraphrased aphorism of John Lennon perfectly reflects the range of interests of a modern person: the Internet with its unlimited possibilities fascinates users so much that ordinary life, flying by day after day, looks dull and monotonous. However, few people think about how to make it brighter, more interesting, more alive, finally.
The world of the 21st century, according to Eduardo Salls, is a deaf and limited world. After all, how else to interpret the “death” of our inner child, who prefers a computer game to football in the yard. There is also a "beggar" begging for alms in the form of "likes": few who need sincere human participation, because the imaginary virtual is much simpler, easier and less costly emotionally.
The designer also reflects on the moral foundations of modern society: a princess who dreams of a beautiful castle is not inferior in pragmatism to a prince who wants to be with a young maiden in the same bed. Among the illustrations, there are those that are devoted to social problems: in particular, a subtle caricature of how the right to freedom of speech is realized in different countries, as well as an “instruction” on the influence of different styles of music on the human brain.
Eduardo Salls himself refers to the project with humor, admitting that he dreams of when it will finally be possible to delete bad ideas from memory using the "Ctrl + z" key combination. Of course, many of us, looking through the artist's minimalist illustrations, mentally agreed, smiled and put a “like” mark. This means that the world is partly developing according to the scenario shown by the resourceful designer.
