Who can you not see on the red carpet: politicians, actors, pop singers and even ducks. Yes, you heard right! The tradition of arranging a mallard procession is a visiting card Peabody Hotellocated in Memphis (Tennessee, USA). Every day at 11 am the birds take an elevator imposingly down from their house, equipped under the roof of the hotel, to the fountain in the lobby, where they splash until 5 pm.
This unique tradition began in 1932 by the hotel's director, Frank Schutt. After returning from a hunt, he and his friends decided that it would be very funny to leave a few ducks in the hotel fountain. The idea caused a real sensation among clients, and since then four beauties and one drake live in the Peabody Hotel.
True, the ducks did not always feel so imposing in the hotel. They were trained in 1940 by Edward Pembroke, who, before coming to work at the hotel, was a circus trainer. It was he who taught the birds a variety of tricks. Incidentally, Edward Pembroke received the honorary title of Duckmaster and served at the hotel until his retirement in 1991.
The average duration of a duck "team" working at a hotel is three months. Then retired individuals return to the farm, and new replenishment arrives at Peabody. Today, Peabody Ducks is a real brand, and the owners of the hotel make sure that the celebrities live well. In 2008 (to mark the 75th anniversary of the tradition) the Duck Palace was opened - a chic building that exactly repeats the Peabody Hotel itself. The floors in the duck penthouse are also finished with granite, there are fans on the ceiling, and the entire wall of the mini-hotel has a large observation window through which guests can watch the life of birds. By the way, the construction of this luxurious "duck house" cost the hotel $ 200,000.
By the way, not only Americans, but also Australians are fond of ducks. Not so long ago, we already surprised our readers with a story about an unusual fashion show in Sydney, in which feathered models traditionally become a participant.
