Figures and images hanging in the air - a special kind of modern sculpture, which art critics from time to time call an installation, because they cannot decide how it will be right. We have already written about the masters of sculptural installations, whose works amaze the imagination, in Cultural Studies. Just remember the sculptures from buttons by Augusto Esquivel, or sculptures from hanging stones by the Korean author Jaehyo Lee. Today's maestro Bak Seon-Ghi (Bahk Seon-Ghi) - also from South Korea, but it hangs in the air not stones, but charcoal. By the way, the sculptor chose charcoal for a reason. His sculptures are the author's attempt to show his vision of the connection between man and nature, their dependence on each other and the need to support and help each other. Coal is a burnt piece of organic material, what forests turn into under the influence of human destructive actions in the name of scientific and technological progress. It is not for nothing that many levitating sculptures made of pieces of charcoal depict nature: flowers, trees, raindrops.
By hanging charcoal on nylon strings, Bak Son Chi creates the illusion of dense shapes floating in the air. It can be both simple geometric shapes and whole castles with columns, stairs with railings, furniture and household items. Careful arrangement and distribution of each piece of coal, unique in shape, allows you to create truly curious works of art. They are at the same time fragile, graceful, airy, but with a rough texture. A play on contrast, which always brings success to the artist if he uses it skillfully and in a timely manner.
Bahk Seon-Ghi's most famous paintings are the Existence-Colums, Circle and Relationship sculptures, which have been featured on numerous occasions in galleries such as the famous Gallery Kong in Seoul.
