Of course, vivid surreal landscapes created on the basis of 3d modeling and subsequent processing with oil paints are already interesting, but the artist Jonathan Zawada went even further. He drew a parallel between what is depicted in his work and real statistics, charts and graphs. A simple mountain now displays the world's overpopulation scale - just one example.
You won't surprise anyone with landscapes now, but if there is some special detail in them, then art connoisseurs stop turning up their noses and simply cannot take their eyes off such simple and familiar things. You can recall, for example, mysterious forests and other mysterious places from Disney artist Eyvind Earle or the project “tree-ball, tree-dandelion” by Vu Cong Dien, which presents very unusual landscapes. Jonathan Zawada also did not reinvent the wheel, but at the same time he gave the opportunity to look at ordinary landscapes from the other side.
Jonathan Zawada is a colorful figure in the art world, judging by the number of interviews with him and reviews of his exhibitions available on the Internet. Before starting work on surreal landscapes based on statistics, he tried a lot of things. From childhood he loved to draw, and as a teenager he fell in love with 3d-modeling. When Jonathan was in high school, he was already making websites, selling T-shirts with his own designs, and working in an animation studio.
How did he come up with the idea of creating landscapes based on real-life charts and graphs? Jonathan Zawada himself says the following about this: “I have always wanted to explore how any objects can be similar, not only visually and structurally, but also in terms of informational visibility. This is what made me think that the edges of the mountains remind me of diagrams and graphs based on different kinds of statistics ”.
Work on each landscape began with the accumulation of statistical information, with the search for it on the Internet. Then graphs were generated based on different combinations and comparisons. After that, on the basis of these graphs, 3d-models of future landscapes were generated, and, finally, the matter was brought to mind with paints.
On the Jonathan Zawada website, in addition to graphs based on statistics, there are several more interesting projects.
